I’m used to a few annoying bugs in the house. That’s part of living in a Wildlife Refuge. They’re usually small and quiet bugs though. I’m not used to large and loud bugs that only crawl out of the ground to procreate and die coming for a visit.

Lloyd was sniffing around and set this guys buzzer off. Twice. Talk about freaked out! I just fixed that fridge, why is it making noise??

Smart bug! I’ll give him that. It’s going to be 100 degrees plus tomorrow and it’ll stay a nice 70 degrees inside all day. Too bad he won’t find a mate in here.

I have many memories of crazed cicadas flying down from treetops right at my face, only to beer off at the last possible second.

And you wanna talk about being freaked out by buzzing cicadas? My brother once found a dead one for his bug collection (not a difficult accomplishment at the end of summer). In the middle of the night it decided it wasn’t actually dead and started buzzing around our bedroom.

That’s awesome!

There was one really bad year when I was a “kid” maybe 1991. Swarms. They’d cloud the sky. Cutting the grass would flush hundreds of them from every bush or shrub. I hated these things. A buddy lived maybe 5 miles away and had none. And he’d rub it in. That was when I decided it was my duty to collect as many as I could and release them in his yard every time I went over there. Bags of them.

Man, out worst years in NoVA were never that bad. One year we had a lot, but it wasn’t too noticeable until they started dying off. Giant dead bugs EVERYWHERE. We would pick them up on the way to the bus stop in the morning and put them on people’s clothing, on desks, in backpacks.

I have never heard how real cicadas sound like. There’s only species living in Finland but they are rare. They live exactly on one certain hillside. It isn’t located very far away from me though.

My favorite thing is when they splatter on my windshield and leave a huge mess that the wipers just smear around instead of cleaning.

The big year here was 2003, but just like you described, swarms. We’d go running around with a baseball bat or tennis racket and smack them out of the sky. The property that we lived on had been vacant for quite a few years prior to our moving, so I think that may have given them some time for the population to grow a bit. I’m curious how many there’ll be in 4 years after how many we killed in 2003. Even just driving down our driveway, you ran over a ton of them.
